DECMBER 2006

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

This is just a quick email to wish you a fabulous festive season, and to give you some news about Benguerra.

Our New Website is LIVE!!!:

We have a gorgeous new website – with lots of beautiful pictures and interesting information.

If you go to the News section, you can sign up for our quarterly newsletters.  We know you don’t want to be inundated with emails, so we’ll only send you interesting news, and only once every few months.

You can also take a Virtual Tour of the Lodge.

You can go to www.benguerra.co.za if you want to have a look.

Any comments you have on our new site would be welcomed.

Khani Kwedho:

We have, as I’m sure you know by now, a community project on the island called Khani Kwedho (meaning ‘Our Home’).  We collect money for a local trust that distributes it as needed.  This is a project that’s very close to our hearts – and we try to assist the trust wherever possible.  So far the trust has built a community hall and a small school and it is planning a clinic.

We often have guests at the Lodge wishing they had known about Khani Kwedho before they left home, so that they could have brought things such as old clothes and pens…  Obviously we don’t expect our guests to bring anything – but these are a few of the things that the community needs:

  • Pens
  • Coloured crayons & pencils
  • Aspirin
  • Children’s clothes (2nd hand ones
  • Pencils
  • Exercise books
  • Plasters (band-aids)
  • Water treatment tablets

Environmental Award for Benguerra!:

We have been awarded a certificate by the Parque Nacional do Arquipélago do Bazaruto (the Bazaruto National Park) in recognition of our dedication to the implementation of the monitoring system for endangered species.  It’s a small thing, but it’s good to know our efforts to preserve and protect the National Park are being noticed.  We hope it will inspire everyone else to do the same.

The Khani Kwedho Children:

We thought you’d like to know that thanks to the generous support of our guests we are able to sponsor 6 orphaned children through primary school on the island – and hope to be able to assist them with high school and possibly even university, when the time comes.

This is our Assistant Manager, Brian Mandiwa, with the six children, in their brand new uniforms (donated by a very generous guest).  The children are, from top left: Amelia Joao Mufumi; Sidalia Jose Guio; Joana Joao Guio; Carlos Pedro Guio; Azarias Carlos Tanguni; Reginaldo Inacio Zivane.

Interesting fact: none of these children are related, although they have very similar names.
